Caring for your new bed

A new bed is an investment, and is worth looking after properly to ensure that you gain the maximum benefit from it over the course of its life.

It is essential that you keep and follow any instructions for use as provided by your bed’s manufacturer. You may also find that they provide a customer advisory service that you can call or email if you have any questions regarding the best ways in which toy look after your new bed.

In addition to the guidance provided by your bed’s manufacturer, Sleep Right Beds recommends the following advice to ensure that you get the most from your new bed.

  • Always protect your pillows and mattress with washable pillowcases, mattress-protectors and bed linen.
  • Before making your bed, pull back the blankets or duvet and allow the bed to air for half an hour to ensure that any accumulated moisture can evaporate.
  • Rotate and flip your new mattress every week for the first month or two to allow ‘settling down’. After this initial period it is advisable to rotate and flip the new mattress every two or three months to ensure even wear over the life of the mattress.
  • Avoid unnecessary wear and tear: don’t repeatedly sit on the edges of your mattress and don’t let children confuse your new bed with a trampoline!
  • Rolling or folding your mattress in order to transport or store it may damage springs and coils resulting in the long-term deformation and shortened lifespan of your mattress.
  • If your new mattress arrives wrapped in plastic, remove this as soon as possible and allow the mattress to acclimatise to the bedroom.  Left wrapped in plastic, a combination of warmth and moisture could lead to the formation of condensation and mildew.
  • Besides regularly changing your bed linen, vacuum your mattress  and bedframe periodically to remove dust and bed fluff.
  • Treat stains with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not soak your mattress for any reason.
  • Ensure that your mattress and base are matched in size. Attempting to fit a new mattress to an unsuitable bed may damage the mattress, reduce its effectiveness and invalidate the manufacturer’s guarantee.
